Two peer-reviewed research papers on this. One co-authored with Dmitri Williams and others, appeared in New Media and Society in 2009. The other, also from 2009, was co-authored with many students and appeared in International Journal of Gaming and Computer-Mediated Simulation. Principal finding: At both the micro and macro levels, economic behavior in virtual environments matches real-world behavior.
